From August 2024 to September 2025, the Brentwood Police Department responded to seven times as many e-bike related crashes as traditional bicycle crashes. These incidents all involved juveniles, and they suffered abrasions, lacerations, head injuries and a broken wrist.

The City of Brentwood is reminding residents – particularly parents of school-aged children – that all e-bike riders need to remain vigilant and obey traffic laws.

Riders Must:

  • Ride on the right, with traffic
  • Obey traffic signs & signals
  • Use hand signals when turning

There are currently three classes of e-bikes.

Class 1 & 2 E-Bikes:

  • Are allowed anywhere regular bikes are allowed

Class 3 E-Bikes:

  • Are allowed on roads (must have speedometer)
  • Are NOT allowed on bike paths/trailsunless next to a road (e.g., bike lane or shoulder) or if a city chooses to allow them

All E-Bikes

Can ride on sidewalks if the motor is off

All E-bike riders should wear helmets and remain alert of other vehicles and pedestrians when operating these vehicles.
