Departmental Awards

The Brentwood Police Department recognizes the achievements, efforts and actions of its personnel, and actions of citizens who assist the police department in a commendable manner through a departmental awards program. The department’s Award and Commendation Committee meets biannually to review nominations of it personnel and citizens who have been recommended to receive an award. The department has ten (10) awards for consideration when reviewing nominations. The committee reviews the nominations to determine if the act or actions meet the criteria for the award. Departmental Awards in order of precedence are as follows:

Order of Precedence

Medal of Valor – Presented posthumously to an employee of the Department who gave his/her life in the line of duty, while demonstrating personal bravery, strength of mind, or spirit, enabling him/her to encounter apparent danger with firmness and courage.

Distinguished Service Award – Presented to an employee of the Department for performing an exceptional act in commendable manner in the line of duty, while demonstrating great personal bravery in an extremely dangerous situation; and, after having been made aware of great personal dangers.

Meritorious Service Award – Presented to an employee of the Department who performed an exceptional act involving superior actions in the line of duty which are of a lesser degree than required for the Distinguished Service Award, but accomplished with distinction beyond that normally expected.

Purple Heart Award – Presented to a sworn police officer of the department, who during the course of his/her duties was shot, stabbed, or injured in any manner requiring hospitalization.

Lifesaving Award – Presented to an employee of the Police Department whose direct actions saved the life of another person, while not necessarily placing him/herself in any physical jeopardy.

Exemplary Service Award – Presented to an employee of the Department for demonstrating outstanding day-to-day performance of his/her duties or a particular action and/or accomplishment that was exemplary in nature, or above expectations within the Employee’s assigned job description.

Efficiency Service Award – Presented to an employee of the Department for a suggestion or accomplishment which has resulted in the improvement of a departmental function or operation, or demonstrated substantial saving of employee workload and/or operational costs by the Department.

Department Commendation – Presented to an employee of the Department for an out standing act and/or achievement which reflects credit on the Department and employee.

Citizen Commendation – Presented to a civilian/citizen in recognition of commendable service through assistance and support rendered the Brentwood Police Department.

Community Service Award – Presented to an individual, a business, or an organization in recognition of service to the City of Brentwood and support of the Brentwood Police Department.
